FourSquares….. and a certain amount of doubt

Kitchen

SPACE
Kitchens nowadays are giant center hubs of the home.  They are usually not well defined from the other “rooms” of a home like the family room, dinning room, etc.  While, I do appreciate the high status that the kitchen seemingly enjoys, we still wanted to recognize the historical perspective of our 1920 home.  Certainly that is NOT to say that we wont be spending plenty of time and resources on the remodel of our kitchen, but rather we wanted to keep the seperately defined space of the kitchen rather than opening up the space entirely as many remodeler tend to do.  In fact by seperately defining the kitchen’s territory, this does, in my opinion, acknowledge the importance of the kitchen (as a space in which meals are prepared), which is in itself a very important role and doesnt need to be intermeshed with “entertaining space” to gain importance. (But that is my own epicurian defence of the kitchen space as its own entity that I do not share with many Americans).

SIZE
The kitchen remains small for todays standards but large for a kitchen of its time.  As you can see in the First Floor Plans: An Overview , we did do some rearranging in the kitchen such as moving over and opening up the wall between kitchen and dinning room (I), opening up the pantry (H), and closing up the doorway into the front hallway (E).  Each of these changes were to achieve three things 1) the feel of a larger space. 2) actual gain of space, and 3) additional wall space.
